Vikings Ladies Thrash Leeds Carnegie to make it Two Wins in Two Days!

Newcastle Vikings women followed up Saturday’s away victory over Manchester with a powerful display to thrash Leeds Carnegie 26-10 on Sunday at South Shields’ Temple Park Leisure Centre and make it two wins in two days.

Captain Sandra Christke was on fire from the start as her four quick strikes from the line position and half Judyta Turulska’s brace opened out a commanding lead for the Vikings in their second England Handball North Regional Development League match of the weekend.  Goalkeeper Andrea King pulled off several good one-on-one saves, Maren Liane scored from the right wing, half Alina Inta and centre Rebecka Östergren each added doubles and Turulska scored her third to give the home side a 12-7 half-time lead.

The Vikings’ defensive solidity was even more impressive in the second half, restricting the Leeds Beckett University side to just three goals.  Östergren powered in three of her own from the line position while Turulska scored from centre, Inta claimed a brace before Östergren reverted to centre and shot in another three.  King made a diving penalty save to thwart the Carnegie keeper’s effort before having a penalty goal of her own disallowed for a foot fault, while Turulska, Inta and Christke each scored again.  Youngster Rebecca Johnson then fired in a long-range cracker from right-half to mark her Vikings league debut in style, and Turulska rounded off Newcastle’s 26-10 victory in the dying seconds.

Newcastle Vikings women: Andrea King (GK), Judyta Turulska (6 goals), Rebecka Östergren (8), Maren Liane (1), Meghan Acres, Alina Inta (5), Sandra Christke (5), Rebecca Johnson (1).
