Saturday 9th March saw Newcastle Vikings host the first ever Handball Tournament for adults in the North East of England. During this exciting and action packed day at Percy Hedley five teams took part: Newcastle Men, Newcastle/Gateshead Men, Sunderland University Men, Newcastle Vikings Women and a mixed Women’s team made up of players from the Vikings, Gateshead and Sunderland Uni. All of the teams played two matches each with many close contests. The two teams who gained the most points were Newcastle Vikings Women and Sunderland University Men, so these two teams met each other in the final of the tournament. The first half was very close with the Newcastle Women staying ahead most of the time. But at half time the score was 6 – 5 to the Sunderland lads. The second period saw Sunderland move through the gears and reach the final whistle as deserving 13 – 7 winners. A fun, successful but exhausting day was had by all the players. Now we can look forward to the next tournament at the end of April where hopefully more players from the North East will be involved!
