Newcastle Vikings ran out overall winners of the inaugural North East Handball Tournament as their men’s and women’s teams claimed another four wins out of four in Sunday’s third and final round of matches against Durham University and York Hunters.
With York having won the first round and Newcastle taking the second round, both on home ground, the scene was set for a competitive final round of matches at the University of Durham Sports Centre in Stockton-on-Tees.
The opening tie saw Newcastle’s men beat Durham 7-5 in a tight and feisty encounter.
The women’s competition again saw Newcastle and York each giving a run out to a couple of Durham University girls, with the Newcastle-Durham team runaway 15-2 winners in their first match of the afternoon.
Durham’s men then convincingly won 15-5 against York.
The second women’s match saw the combined Newcastle-Durham side claim another victory over York-Durham, 8-3 this time.
The final men’s match was another close contest as Newcastle and York traded goals throughout, before the Vikings eventually scored a 12-10 win to seal the overall tournament title.
Newcastle Vikings would like to thank all the players who took part in the three North East tournament days and look forward to another fun competition next season.
