Newcastle Vikings Handball Club are proud to confirm that our women’s team has qualified to play in the British Handball Super Cup finals in Edinburgh this coming weekend 20-21 May 2023.
The British Handball Super Cup event, once again being held at Scotland’s Oriam Sport Performance Centre, sees the top two men’s and women’s teams from the English Premier League and Scottish National League battling it out to be crowned British Champions, with the top three qualifying to have the opportunity to represent Great Britain in the European Handball Federation’s EHF European Cup competitions next season. Having finished second in the Scottish women’s league this year, playing in the Super Cup promises to be an amazing climax to Newcastle Vikings Handball Club’s 10th anniversary season.
The Vikings will take on England’s Premier League champions Olympia Handball Club London in our semi-final match on the Oriam showcourt on Saturday 20 May (12 noon throw-off), in what will be our highest profile and most challenging match to date since the club was established back in autumn 2012.
We will then face either Scottish champions Edinburgh or England’s runners-up West London Eagles on Sunday 21 May in either the 3rd/4th-place play-off (10am throw-off) or the Super Cup final (2pm throw-off), depending on the results of Saturday’s semi-final matches.
Newcastle Vikings head coach Marlen Slinning Goulty said “We are all really looking forward to competing in the Super Cup. It will be a tough ask to win against some really strong teams, but a fantastic opportunity to showcase handball and the Vikings and we will certainly give it our best. Hopefully the publicity will also help us to attract some club sponsorship too“.
The two-day national event will be broadcast live on the Scottish Handball Association’s YouTube and social media channels, as well as potentially on the BBC Sport website and red button.
