Newcastle Vikings Women’s Team played Aberdeen University in the last round of the Scottish League. The game was set up to be very exciting and tense, as the winner was guaranteed to secure 3rd place in the league and finish the season on a high. In the previous match against Aberdeen, the Vikings lost by 2 goals so the players knew it wouldn’t be an easy match to win. With only 7 girls, they travelled up to Dundee in high spirits as always. They got off to a flying start, racing into a 9-0 lead after 9 minutes. But with no available substitutes, the game was never going to be all plain sailing for the 7 Vikings players. Aberdeen started to fight back but the Vikings remained dominant and by half time the score stood at 18-6 to the Newcastle team. The second half didn’t start quite so well for the Vikings, with Aberdeen getting some quick goals. But the Vikings ladies with their strong defence and goalkeeper always managed to keep their opponents at arm’s length. Their ability to keep encouraging and pushing each other never wavered, with the game finishing in an incredibly impressive 29-12 victory.
A big thank you to all the ladies who have contributed in our first ever season in a league. It has been an amazing journey and the team spirit and togetherness among the ladies has been outstanding throughout.
