Vikings women slip to Liverpool defeat

Newcastle Vikings Handball Club’s women took on a tough, powerful Liverpool side in today’s England North Regional Development League match at Temple Park Leisure Centre in South Shields.

The Vikings got off to a promising start as Marlen Slinning and Marie Brevet each scored early goals. But Liverpool’s greater experience soon came to the fore as they levelled before pulling away into a strong lead. Newcastle kept fighting with a couple of strikes from left-half Judyta Turulska and a breakaway goal from winger Brevet, but by half-time Liverpool had built a 16-5 advantage.

The Newcastle defence line nevertheless made sure that the second half was a tighter affair as they tried their hardest to narrow the gap. Line-player Sofie Vaula added her name on the scoresheet as further goals from Turulska, Slinning and Brevet kept the Vikings going. The biggest cheer of the day came from Turulska’s seemingly unlikely free throw goal past the solid Liverpool defensive wall in the final-second! But it wasn’t enough as Liverpool maintained their unbeaten start to the season, taking the three points with a 26-12 final score.

Newcastle Vikings: Andrea King (GK), Marie Brevet (3), Marlen Slinning (3), Judyta Turulska (5), Sofie Vaula (1), Blessing Ogbee, Josefine Nanne, Sandra Christke.
