Glasgow and Newcastle Vikings took the men’s and women’s competition honours in Saturday’s highly successful second annual Tyneside handball tournament.The early matches were all fairly close-fought affairs as the 12 teams from across England and Scotland gradually got themselves accustomed with the newly marked-out full-size 40m x 20m handball court at Temple Park Leisure Centre in South Shields.
The tournament got underway with the first of two Newcastle Vikings men’s teams beating local rivals Sunderland University 14-10. With their women and second men’s team then claiming 10-5 and 13-7 wins respectively, both over York Hunters, moral was high on board the Vikings ship as all three Newcastle teams were topping their groups after the first round of group matches.

The Vikings women continued strongly with a 9-3 win against Birmingham’s Cranfield University Wolves in their second match of the day.
However, the men’s teams from Glasgow, East Kilbride’s EK82, Edinburgh and Cranfield University soon picked up the pace with some big 20-plus goal wins in the quick-fire 20 minute matches. Glasgow went on to win all three of their Group A matches, while EK82 pipped Edinburgh on goal difference to take Group B, thanks in particular to their resounding 28-3 win over York.
Meanwhile, Edinburgh ended up topping the women’s group with their third win in a row, after a 9-7 win over a seemingly tiring Newcastle side.

But with the adrenalin flowing for the final re-match, and despite losing head coach and top-scorer Marlen Slinning to an early ankle injury, the Newcastle Vikings’ women drew upon their typical never-say-die attitude and strong team spirit to run out 10-4 winners, claiming the trophy with their well-deserved first victory against Edinburgh in seven league and tournament matches.
The tournament finale saw a thrilling affair as EK82 and Glasgow level-pegged each other throughout, before Glasgow eventually took the spoils with a 10-9 victory to raise the men’s competition trophy. Newcastle Vikings Handball Club would like to thank all the teams for coming to play with great competitive enthusiasm and friendliness in what was another most enjoyable handball tournament.
