Newcastle Vikings’ under-14 junior boys team have been competing in the Scottish 08/09 year-groups league for this 2022/23 season, for which the teams play each other in several tournament-style days at centralised venues.
Their first tournament day up in Kilmarnock in October saw the boys narrowly lose 6-4 to hosts Kelvinside and 7-6 to East Kilbride’s EK82, before a heavier 12-1 defeat to Cumbernauld-based Tryst 77. However, the Vikings put in a fantastic effort to finish the day with a well-deserved 2-1 win over tournament winners Troon to finish in 4th place out of the five teams.
December’s second tournament day began with 1-7 and 12-5 losses to Kelvinside and Troon respectively. But the Vikings boys then scored a brilliant 4-9 victory over EK82, before narrowly losing 4-6 against Tryst 77 to once again place them 4th as Troon again took the day’s overall honours.
The Vikings juniors’ next Scottish league tournament is being held at Newcastle’s Benfield Sports Centre this Sunday 5 February (12:30-5pm), so come along a give them some home support!
In addition to the club’s 10th anniversary celebration matches back in October, our youth, junior and mini Vikings players have enjoyed fun internal friendly match days tied in with Children in Need fundraising in November and our biggest and best-yet Christmas raffle in December. Another day of friendly games took place in January, with a youth friendly and open day for kids aged 3, 4 and 5 set to to take place at Benfield Sports Centre on Saturday 11 February (3:45-6pm).
Off the court, the Vikings youngsters have also enjoyed going to support Newcastle United’s women’s football team at St. James’ Park in November, and indoor climbing in January.
