Scotland Conquer All in Vikings Tournament

Glasgow and Edinburgh took the men’s and women’s honours respectively as they won the fifth annual Tyneside Handball Tournament at South Shields’ Temple Park Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Hosted by Newcastle Vikings Handball Club, a full day of fast-paced action-packed handball saw 10 teams from across England and Scotland taking part in the quick-fire 20-minute men’s and women’s group and placing matches.

Glasgow went unbeaten throughout the day to regain their title and become three-time champions with a 16-11 victory over East Kilbride’s EK82 in a repeat of the 2014 men’s final, Maciej Trzos and Jack Lees each scoring six goals for the two Scottish sides respectively.  Durham Olympic claimed third place with a 12-7 win over Bedfordshire’s Cranfield University, while Newcastle Vikings defeated York Hunters 12-5 in the 5th/6th place play-off.

In the women’s competition Edinburgh won for the first time since 2013, beating the University of Leeds 11-5 in the final, Emma Andersen leading the way for the Scots with four strikes.  Having surrendered their title, Newcastle Vikings’ ladies beat Cranfield University 7-5 to take third place in a battle of the 2014/16 and 2015 tournament winners.

The men’s tournament top-scorer award went to Durham University half-player Lucas Palumbo with 21 goals, while University of Leeds winger Magda Karwatka top-scored in the women’s competition with 11 goals.

Newcastle Vikings Handball Club would like to congratulate the tournament winners and thank all the teams for taking part in another fun day of handball.
